Polling interval for OCI monitoring

The polling interval is the duration between successive requests for performance data from Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) resources. By configuring this interval, you can control how often Site24x7 checks the status and performance of your OCI resources.

How it works

When you set up monitoring for your OCI resources in Site24x7, the platform periodically queries OCI for performance metrics and metadata based on the specified polling interval. This enables the system to gather real-time data and provides you with insights into your resource performance, such as CPU usage, memory consumption, and network traffic.

Site24x7 queries your OCI resources at regular intervals to collect performance metrics and metadata. This polling interval is applied to every individual resource. For instance, if you have 10 OCI Compute Instances being monitored by Site24x7, performance metrics will be collected for all 10 instances according to the configured polling frequency.

The polling interval for all OCI services can be set as low as one minute, allowing for near-real-time data collection. You can also configure the maximum polling frequency to be as long as one day.

Multiple polling frequencies in Site24x7

To ensure that critical cloud components remain fully operational, continuous monitoring is essential. However, the frequency of checks may differ based on the specific needs of each component. To address this, Site24x7 provides multiple check frequency options, allowing you to select the polling interval that best aligns with your monitoring requirements.

You can now customize the standard check frequency of five minutes and choose from polling intervals of one, three, five, 10, 15, 20, or 30 minutes, and there are also options for one hour or one day.

Metrics for each service will be retrieved from OCI according to the polling frequency you select. You can modify the poll frequency for monitors during discovery or for existing monitors using:

  • Tags
  • Monitor groups
  • Monitor types
Note

This setting works using the logical OR operation, meaning if you provide multiple conditions for a single monitor (for example, a polling frequency of five minutes defined by a tag and another of 15 minutes defined by a monitor group), the condition will be decided based on the order of priority, which is, from highest to lowest priority, tags, monitor groups, and monitor types.

Assigning polling frequencies using tags

Manage your OCI resources efficiently by utilizing key-value pairs in the form of tags. These tags enable you to assign polling frequencies to your monitors within the Site24x7 console. When adding a new OCI monitor, you'll see an option to set the polling frequency using tags in the Advanced Configuration section.

Assigning polling frequencies using monitor groups

Using the advanced configuration features in Site24x7, you can create monitor groups to organize similar monitors into a single group. This allows you to assign polling frequencies to all monitors within that group. In the Advanced Configuration > Poll Frequency Settings, type $ in the text box for the key, select $MonitorGroup from the drop-down, and then enter the name of the monitor group in the Value field, as illustrated below:

Assigning polling frequencies based on monitor type

You can assign polling frequencies to monitors according to their monitor type. In the Advanced Configuration > Poll Frequency Settings, enter $ in the Key text box and select $MonitorType from the drop-down menu. You can choose one or multiple monitor types and assign a polling frequency accordingly.

Overwriting the existing poll interval

Here’s how the Overwrite Existing Poll Interval option works in Site24x7:

  • Enabling the Overwrite Existing Poll Interval option will replace the current polling frequency values with the new ones you set.
  • The Overwrite Existing Poll Interval option will not be displayed during the monitor discovery process. However, to change the check frequency, you can edit individual monitors after discovery. If you wish to adjust configurations post-discovery, return to the Advanced Configurations page and toggle the Overwrite Existing Poll Interval option to Yes. Once the option is set to Yes and saved, the new values will be overwritten after five minutes.
  • For monitors meeting multiple conditions, the poll frequency defined by the tag that first matches the criteria will be applied.
  • If you prefer not to change the existing configuration, simply leave the toggle set to No.

This feature allows you to customize polling intervals while maintaining control over your monitoring setup.
