How to Monitor Elastic Cloud Server in Huawei Cloud

Product Name monitors Huawei Cloud's Elastic Cloud Server (ECS), providing insights into CPU, disk I/O, and network metrics to help you detect resource bottlenecks early and ensure reliable application performance.

Use cases

Monitor resource health: Detect congestion early by monitoring CPU and disk I/O, enabling faster resolution of performance bottlenecks.

Gain network insights: Identify anomalies by tracking network traffic and packet rates, helping detect saturation or potential security issues.

Setup and configuration

ECS resources are auto-discovered and monitored during the Huawei Cloud integration. To enable monitoring, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to Cloud > Huawei > Add Huawei Monitor. Follow the steps to add a Huawei Cloud monitor.
  2. While adding or editing a Huawei Cloud monitor, select ECS from the Service/Resource Types drop-down menu and click Save.
  3. Go to Cloud > Huawei. Then, select the created Huawei monitor.
  4. Click ECS to view the performance metrics.

Supported metrics

CPU and Disk I/O

Metric name Description Unit
CPU Utilization The percentage of the ECS instance's total CPU capacity currently being consumed by all running processes. Percentage
Disk Read Bytes Rate The rate at which data is being read from all attached disks. Bytes/second
Disk Write Bytes Rate The rate at which data is being written to all attached disks. KB/second
Disk Read Requests Rate The number of read I/O operations issued to disk per second (read IOPS). Requests/second
Disk Write Requests Rate The number of write I/O operations issued to disk per second (write IOPS). Requests/second

Network: Bandwidth

Metric name Description Unit
Network Incoming Bytes Aggregate Rate The total rate of inbound network data received by the ECS instance across all network interfaces. Bytes/second
Network Outgoing Bytes Aggregate Rate The total rate of outbound network data transmitted from the ECS instance across all network interfaces. Bytes/second
VM Inbound Bandwidth The current inbound network bandwidth being consumed by the virtual machine, measured at the hypervisor level. Bytes/second
VM Outbound Bandwidth The current outbound network bandwidth being consumed by the virtual machine. Bytes/second

Network: Packets

Metric name Description Unit
VM Inbound Packets Per Second The number of network packets being received by the VM per second. Count
VM Outbound Packets Per Second The number of network packets being transmitted from the VM per second. Count
VM Network Connections The total number of active TCP/UDP connections currently established on the VM. Count
VM New Network Connections The rate at which new network connections are being established per second. Count

Summary

The Summary tab displays the current status and key performance metrics of the ECS instance, giving you a quick view of CPU, disk I/O, and network health.

Dependency View

The Dependency View tab maps an ECS instance to its attached Elastic Volume Service (EVS) disks, helping you quickly determine whether an issue is isolated to the instance.

Common monitored data

Outages

The Outages tab displays outage details, including start time, end time, duration, and related comments, to help track and review downtime events.

Notes

The Notes tab enables you to record descriptions, operational context, runbook steps, recent changes, and reference links to keep your team informed. Format the content using markdown syntax.

Log Report

The Log Report tab provides a unified view of the respective monitor's log status and supports CSV downloads for analysis and auditing.

Alert Logs

The Alert Logs tab provides a comprehensive list of all alerts generated by the monitor. Easily track key details such as the monitored resource name, alert trigger time, root cause, and notification status. Learn more.

Threshold configuration

You can configure thresholds and alerts for all ECS metrics to detect performance degradation proactively or connection issues.

  1. Go to Admin > Configuration Profiles > Threshold and Availability.
  2. Create or modify your alert profiles.
  3. Assign the profile to specific ECS monitors to receive alerts on anomalies.

IT Automation

Use Product Name's IT Automation to resolve common issues with ECS performance automatically:

  1. Go to Admin > IT Automation Templates > Add Automation Templates.
  2. Create an automation rule by selecting the automation Type (e.g., Server reboot, clear queue).
  3. Map the created rules to the ECS, for automatic execution during alerts.

Configuration rules

Use Configuration Rules to simplify bulk setup across ECS instances. Automatically assign Threshold Profiles, Notification Profiles, Tags, and Monitor Groups when new monitors are discovered.
