Azure Monitoring Security Best Practices

This document contains security best practices for fortifying your Azure accounts and monitoring them 24/7 without lag.

Best practices for your Azure monitor's security

1. Use the principle of least privilege

There is a possibility that your configurations might get altered without notice when you assign a higher role, such as an admin or a contributor for all your resources. It is ideal to grant minimal permissions for your accounts and subscriptions. This will eliminate unauthorized access. Be informed that you can also create custom RBAC roles for specific purposes.

When you create a custom application and use it for multiple processes and transactions, it becomes an issue when the application is compromised. Creating a custom application and using it only for monitoring purposes will help you reduce the impact. If the application faces an issue, it will not affect the other operations.

2. Secure authentication and authorization

Minimize the duration of the Client Secret to reduce the risk of exposure. Client Secrets that have a longer life duration are more vulnerable to breaches. You can also rotate keys as we alert you when you set the expiry date of the secrets on our portal.

3. Assign Access Controls (IAM) as per Azure

Sometimes, it's difficult to manage your accounts, subscriptions, and resources. This can get worse when you have multiple subscriptions and numerous resources. To avoid this, you can create monitor groups and assign respective roles based on the IAM settings of your account in the Azure portal.

4. Secure API keys

While integrating your server with the Azure VM, ensure that the API key that you copy and save from Site24x7 is secure. It is highly recommended that you store it in your vault for future reference. This enables you to avoid unauthorized intrusions.

5. Monitor and audit access controls frequently

Track the changes in the access controls and your account in Site24x7 so that you don't lose sight of your resources and controls.

Our Site24x7 Azure Monitoring Guidance report also includes additional security best practice recommendations. Get acquainted with them to understand your Azure monitor better.
