Windows Instance Issues

  • Unable to connect AWS Systems Manager Session Manager to a Windows Server 2025 instance

    Solution:

    • Ensure that **SSM Agent** is installed and running:
      • Get-Service AmazonSSMAgent
    • Verify that the instance IAM role has `ssm:StartSession` permission.
    • Check if the required ports (`443`) are open.
    • Restart the SSM Agent:
      • Restart-Service AmazonSSMAgent
  • EBS volumes don't initialize on Windows Server 2016 and 2019

    Solution:

    • Ensure the volume is properly attached to the instance.
    • Open **Disk Management** and bring the disk online:
      • diskpart
list disk
select disk X
online disk
    • Check for missing drivers using **Device Manager**.
  • Boot an EC2 Windows instance into Directory Services Restore Mode (DSRM)

    Solution:

    • Reboot the instance and press `F8` during startup.
    • Select **Directory Services Restore Mode** from the boot options.
    • Reset the DSRM password if needed:
      • ntdsutil
set dsrm password
reset password on server NULL
  • Instance loses network connectivity or scheduled tasks don't run when expected

    Solution:

    • Check **Windows Firewall rules** blocking network traffic.
    • Restart the network adapter:
      • Get-NetAdapter | Restart-NetAdapter
    • Verify the **Windows Time Service** is synchronized:
      • w32tm /resync
    • Ensure **scheduled tasks** have the correct permissions and triggers.
  • Unable to get console output

    Solution:

    • Check the instance **status checks** in the AWS Console.
    • Retrieve console logs using AWS CLI:
      • Get-EC2ConsoleOutput -InstanceId i-xxxxxx
    • If logs are empty, try rebooting the instance.
  • Windows Server 2012 R2 not available on the network

    Solution:

    • Verify that the **network adapter is enabled** in Windows.
    • Restart the network service:
      • Restart-Service -Name "NlaSvc"
    • Ensure that DHCP is enabled:
      • netsh interface ipv4 show config
    • If using a static IP, verify the correct settings.
  • Disk signature collision

    Solution:

    • Check disk signatures using Disk Management or:
      • diskpart
list disk
select disk X
uniqueid disk
    • Assign a new signature if needed:
      • diskpart
select disk X
uniqueid disk id=NEWID
    • Detach and reattach the disk if conflicts persist.
